300 word culture magazine

The newly come up rapper 'Kaspa', hits the charts with his new single 'Garden'. Kaspa's rise to hip-hop fame is no surprise. His ascent up the charts proves sing-rap has found its rightful place once again with its recent popularity. The song is still gaining views and streams rapidly but as of now it has already reached 10 million views on YouTube, 15 million streams on Spotify, 12 million on iTunes and has made it on the billboard hot 100 at number 5 only within two weeks of being released. The man behind the music 'Kieran Barnett' was born in London, England in 2001 and the lyrics used within his music stems from his past experiences from growing up within the sometimes violent and hectic environment of Croydon as-well as previous relationships.

In our featured interview with Kaspa, we asked how he went about on creating his unique sing-rap style and how he felt when seeing react the overwhelmingly positive response from fans worldwide, he told us - “Most aspiring artists nowadays must create their own style and identity to blow up in this industry instead of following the trends” says Kaspa, whose particular style of sing-rap has become most popular and synonymous with teenagers and young adults both male and female. “And I always say, ‘Just have fun with it, don't be a try hard” This is to be expected from the 17 year-old singer, rapper and songwriter, born Kieran Barnett, who unexpectedly stepped into the spotlight this year.  His current hit 'Garden' is described to be make listeners feel emotional but relaxed. The song is about a souring relationship that Kaspa had within his life: "Rockstar lifestyle, might just die tonight, If I was down and had nobody, would you sacrifice?"

Aside  from its emotional lyricism, the songs meaning rests in its personal connection to the audience, as the lost relationship he describes in the song relates to many of the listeners and they prefer the relaxed tones of his music. Kaspa is currently on tour in Europe and his opening show will take place within London, UK. He is also working on new material for his follow-up single or album. His new music will reflect the times when he had fun in life, because he feels he should attempt to appeal to a different side of the listeners emotions. "I have more clarity,” he says. “I feel to explain the good times in life with friends and past girlfriends". "I feel I have to be clearer and tackle new things straight on instead of pushing them away."

Tide print advert analysis

Analysis

The layout and design of the of the print advertisement includes a main image of a woman with the Tide product along with secondary images of women with machine mashings and washing clothes which is the first thing the viewers will see and relate the product to, along with a bold and red masthead/title, which is bright red and catches the viewers attention.  Their is also clear repetition of buzz words such as the brand name Tide along with multiple slogans and tagline, this stands out and helps the viewers remember the product, especially if its catchy.

Introduced In 1946. Tide was first introduced in the United states. They gave customers a free detergent with a washing machine. It was the number one product in its core supermarket. After the war many people wanted to rebuild and start looking forward to a brighter future by moving on from the war. New Technology- Proliferation to technology happened which is an advancement to things, but at that time it was mainly a advancement to technology. When things like advertisements happened it was mainly targeted to the upper and middle class and who were white seeing as they had the most money back then.

Women in this poster are represented mainly as an house wife seeing as she's wearing a pin up top, and her hair and clothes are what house wives usually wore back then. Her red lipstick signifies a multiple of things, it could signify love, it could even denote a sexual vibe which is all aimed at the product tide. The women is hugging the product tide and her eyes are fluctuated on the product as well which symbolises her love and need for tide, but they go off which denotes the idea that she dreaming about the product. The word ‘Tide’ is used to represent the washing away of all the bad germs from not only the clothes but from after the war and after all the horrible things that happened in it.

The representation of gender that are being shown in this poster are of women and how they are represented and signified as house wife's. They have used this stereotype by dressing her in clothes that society would normally associate with women being housewife's. Back in the 50’s women who shown that much skin would be seen as a bit of a tart, and the bright red lipstick that she is wearing would also signify that representation. With women seeing this poster and the product ‘Tide’ they would inspire to be represented like that and how confident this women is on doing that advertisement.

The mode of address In this poster is that its clean and that it gets the jobs done, this is done by the repetition of words like ‘Clean’ and ‘White’. The use of the secondary picture of the woman with the washing machine represents the cleanliness of the product. The women in this poster is not only targeting this product to other women but to men as well, seeing as if men saw this in the 50’s they would want their wife to be like that as well so its targeted at them to buy it as well.

Statement of Aims

Statement of Aims - Music Video

Song Options -

Trippie Redd - Uka Uka
Playboi Carti - Love Hurts
XXXTentacion - Everybody Dies in there nightmares
XXXTentacion - Carry on
Juice Wrld - Scared of Love
Juice Wrld - Long Gone
Juice Wrld - Let me Know (My chosen song)
Lil Skies - Cloudy Skies
Lil Skies - Garden

Firstly, I intend on using the song 'Garden' by Lil Skies for my music video. I chose this song out of the multiple options as I thought this song especially would be appropriate and fit the criteria of the song not already having a music video and being longer then 3 minutes (3:03). I also enjoy this song and the artist Lil Skies personally which is also a big factor to why i chose this song.

Furthermore, when it comes to the production of my music video, i will be using my iphone 6 to film all scenes for the video as i feel the camera is more then adequate to capture video. The locations in which the scenes i plan to film include a park, alleyway, car park (rooftop, inside and staircase) and forest. I specifically chose these locations in relation to the song i have chosen as i feel these locations would fit the relaxed tone of the song. I also picked locations that were accessible, the amount of locations I've stated exceed the criteria of 3 and i hope to utilise all or most of these locations to fit this criteria. In Addition, the apparel i will be wearing will consist of 3 or more different outfits across the scenes to keep the video interesting within every cut to different scenes to capture the audiences attention throughout, this also relates with the amount of locations i've chosen.

When filming the video I will film all the scenes myself. I also plan to use certain camera techniques i wish to use within my video. I intend on using multiple camera techniques for this video and first of all i decided to focus on camera movement techniques as this is what can make the music video effective or not in presenting the mood of the song, some of these techniques will be well known however, some might be sourced from tips and advise from actual music video producers. The camera movement techniques i will use are: Action shot (matching the camera movement to the tempo of the song or the movements of the artist themselves), In and out shot (moving away and toward the artist), Semi Circle (moving left and right around the artist but not all the way around), Full Circle (Circle all around the artist) and Tracking Shot (any angle following the artist).

The narrative of my music video will be my main star being haunted by his past self in physical form due to a dark past but he changed has ways and at the end defeats his dark past and is freed to start a new.

The Fall & Luther Comparison

In The Fall it uses many camera shots such as close-ups, long-shots, pov shots, god perspective shots and tracking shots. The editing of the camera angles matches the pace of the slow narrative. The mis en scene of this series is dark in tone and is much more serious then luther. Furthermore, in the fall the villain is shown to be more attractive, normal and human rather then just a evil and unattractive person with no regard for life, this is due to the villain being revealed to have a family with two young children. This somewhat makes the audience sympathise with this villain however, the audience still have to see him as a villain due to his violent acts and crimes that the audience know he has committed. Luther also uses close-ups, long-shots and tracking shots. however, instead of it being slow paced, the editing follows the action the character is in and is fast paced. Also, unlike the more humanely portrait murderer in the fall, in Luther the villain is shown to be a heartless person who has no regard for life, she is intelligent, deceptive and is more discrete with her crimes rather the killer from the fall who is not discrete and is more aggressive and direct rather then plotting his murder to try prevent him getting caught. In Luther, the actor Idris Elba is the main protagonist of the story being the investigator, this is iconography as he is a well known respected actor which will draw an audience in to watch it. In the Fall, iconography is shown mostly through the murderer in this show, this is because he is the well known actor Jamie Dornan who is commonly regarded as being handsome, which again relates to the idea of him being the unexpected villain of the story.

My favourite genre is horror as i enjoy being frightened and afraid (thrill seeker). This sense of danger is thrilling. Or science fiction because its very captivating and interesting to understand the fictional universes created using science. My least favourite would be romance as it bores me and does not give me any sort of satisfaction as i am not able to relate to the characters situations.

In film production, the pre-credit scene is the section of the film which is shown before the opening or closing credits are shown.

Charity Advertisement Analysis

Save the children ad

The visual codes used in the ad consist of the way the girl changed in her apparel and physical state in each shot, the shots represent the days of the year in seconds, this is seen in how it begins with her birthday and ends with her birthday. Furthermore, in each second of shot her appearance changes in some way as she gets more depressed throughout mentally whilst also physically becoming more dirtier and her clothing and hair becoming more distressing. The Audio codes heard throughout the ad are very effective as it gives us subtle quiet tones in the beginning of the ad with happy tones such as a children laughing and a warm-family atmosphere which then progresses to darker tone sounds of screams and explosions which contrasts against the beginning and slowly twists the story, disturbing the viewer making it more impactful mentally, positioning them to actually care as it gives them a glimpse of what their home could be like and what it could turn into such as in the ad, however, near to the end when the viewers realise this is actually happening but instead in Syria, which in turn then makes them realise the irony of the situation and their fear in the possible outbreak of war in their home country and how this is already occurring in Syria and the ads persuades them to help support the cause as if they were supporting their own country in the possible case of a war outbreak.

Straight Outta Compton Marketing Campaign Analysis

The movie 'Straight Outta Compton' can be seen as a independent movie despite the huge following and fan base behind the story of the film. The age demographic would be teens and adults due to the history and following of the rap group of N.W.A and each individual artist/actor, also gender would be any who are interested in old school hip hop and the culture of music and pop in general. The budget of the film was only 50 million, much lower then most films which is why i decided to label it as independent. Genres that can be associated with this film can be music, history, crime, drama and  biography. The plot of the film is about a new rap group N.W.A who create there first studio album, 'Straight Outta Compton', this album then creates controversy with its brutally honest depiction of life in Southern Los Angeles. The films characters consist of Jerry heller(Paul Giamatti), the groups manager and as for the group themselves, it consists of Ice Cube (O'Shea Jackson Jr), Dr. Dre(Corey Hawkins), Eazy-E(Jason Mitchell), DJ Yella(Neil Brown Jr), MC Ren(Aldis Hodge), we follow these characters through the music industry, acquiring fame, fortune and how they now hold significant place in the history of music. From the characters you can see the film consists of well known and respected actors which could bring an audience in themselves as well as the films story/plot. The film is set in 1988 which could also appeal to an audience that appeals to vintage visual aesthetics.

Video game franchise analysis

For my assignment i have chose to research the 'Uncharted' game series.

Uncharted is a action-adventure, third-person, shooter, platform video game series developed by Naughty Dog and published by sony interactive Entertainment, exclusive to playstation consoles.

The series follows protagonist Nathan "Nate" Drake (portrayed by Nolan North through voice and motion capture) a charismatic yet obsessive treasure hunter who journeys across the world to uncover various historical mysteries. Film Industry & Trailer Analysis

For my "Mainstream" high concept film, i have decide to use the recently released marvel superhero film 'Black Panther. This film is a clear example of a mainstream film as the audience behind this certain film is huge, this is due to all the popularity of the film across media due to this film being focused one of the first ever black superheroes to ever be created. This was seen as a huge milestone in the black community as it represents equal rights, so when this movie was due to be released it caused a lot of anticipation in seeing this live action film starring a majority black cast, the same goes for the narrative as the film is set in Africa where there is a hidden country called 'Wakanda' who are far more technologically advanced then the rest of the world and a warrior/king named 'Black Panther' protects the country, this idea is interesting in itself and visually appealing however this can empower the black community and intrigue them to watch the film. Furthermore, the marvel cinematic universe in general has amassed a huge following since the the comics which brings the biggest audience and fan base to the film. The genre of this film can be described as an action/sci-fi film, these genres are one of the most popular as these genres mostly relate to being interesting and entertaining, rather then boring. The film had a large budget of 200 million dollars and had a cast of popular, recognisable stars within its cast, such as: Chadwick Boseman, Michael B. Jordan, Lupita Nyong'o, Martin Freeman, Angela Bassett, Forest Whitaker and Andy Serkis just to name a few.

For my Independent film i have chosen is the love drama 'The Shape Of Water', this film has decent average sized audience, it stars a mute woman played by the well known actress Sally Hawkins and other actors/actresses such as Doug Jones(her Amphibian love interest), Michael Shannon, Octavia Spencer, Richard Jenkins and many more. The film was Directed by the renowned Guillermo Del Toro. This Director has produced many cult classics of films that bring off a dark, dramatic tone. Films such as Pans Labyrinth, Devils Backbone, Cronos, Mimic and Crimson peak has gained this director a fan base due to his unique and peculiar almost-horror based films that manage to be emotional and impactful whilst still being frightening. Del Toro has also produced more mainstream projects such as pacific rim, hobbit series, blade series and Hell boy series, all of which are more action films then horror. The narrative of the film follows the mute woman who is a janitor/cleaner at a lab and one day the scientists bring an amphibian humanoid sea creature and over time the mute women begins to fall in love with the creature, this is a clear indication of a romance/drama film as love is struck between these two. The film also seems to be set in the early 60's which could appeal to an audience who visually appeals to vintage aesthetics and even history of an insight of life during the Cold War. The film grossed 92.3 million dollars, which is much less then a high budget marvel film however amongst del toros most popular films, this one excelled and grossed the most, showing that it was popular.

Stereotype image analysis

Negative stereotypes are represented through media such as newspapers and their covers. A very sensitive topic amongst society days are muslims and their extremist counterparts that society seem to relate to the religion as a whole. This stereotype causes outrage amongst the muslim community as they are being ridiculed and judged by society. More extensive examples of muslim stereotypes are shown on the picture on the right below, this is a photo created to showcase common stereotypes related to the muslim religion. In the picture the stereotypes are individually and physically placed and stuck all over a muslim mans face, this is to relate to the 'label' social stigma on where people associate certain words with an individual based on a certain trait that they have.

The newspaper cover i have chosen is this one from the publisher 'The Sun'. Here the headline is "1 in 5 Brit Muslims sympathy for jihadis", this headline is a negative stereotype as it is saying that so british muslims sympathise for jihadis, which they have rephrased it to seem less offensive and to be seen more as a statistic. This relates to the "hypodermic needle theory", this is a model of communications suggesting that an intended message is directly received and wholly accepted by the receiver. The theory relates to this newspaper cover as the headline is trying to spread the stereotype of muslims being a imminent threat, even british muslims, this message is then fed to the public to make actually believe that they are in danger and british muslims are an imminent threat to their safety. The newspaper publisher 'The Sun' is known as one of the most biased publishers, this is due to their Proximity factor as more local newspapers or tabloids such as The Sun's newspaper stories tends to be more local to spark more interest in the reader but they are also more ethnocentric than other quality newspapers this means they tend to judge other cultures based on their own preconceptions within their own culture, so a headline such as this is not unexpected from a publisher such as 'The Sun' as they exploit their readers and send false messages which the audience then believe and accept to then carry on this social stigma on stereotypes.

Newspaper Cover Analysis

Firstly, the masthead 'The Sun', encourages interest in the front cover story and the newspaper itself due to the 'The Sun' being a respected tabloid and trusted, local, Sunday edition source of the latest news stories on current events and also due to the large size of the bold read text capturing the eye of the audience. Beside the the masthead is a plug, where it says ''free new-look tv mag'', the word 'free' persuades the audience immediently into looking into the newspaper as it helps them spark interest into possibly winning some sort of free prize. Furthermore, the plug uses star-billing as they show a picture of ant  and dec, two respected and iconic celebrities on British television. The main image used is highly impactful in persuading the audience as it shows a image of firemen holding/saving a civilian from what looks to be a recent attack or incident of some sort and so this would spark interest within the reader to find out what incident has occurred. The main headline works with the main image to create a highly impactful news paper cover. The main headline reads ''massacre in Paris'', here the word 'massacre' has connotations to high amounts of death, chaos and possibly destruction so this would interest and therefore encourage the readers to engage into the story and the newspaper itself to find out more about the incident. Above the main headline are two straplines, the most impactful strapline is the first which states some grim facts about the incident that occurred such as ''40 killed in gun and bomb terror attacks'', this is greatly impactful into drawing in a audience as these added facts give he reader an insight on the depth of the situation to help them more understand why this story is being regarded as a 'massacre', this gives the readers a trust in a solid source of news. Lastly, i identified a pull quote from this newspaper due to the small boxed text in the bottom right with a photo beside it which seems to be some sort of extremist group member. A pull quote is similar to a strapline as it is meant to be a brief source of information on the main text of an article used as a subheading or graphic feature as seen on this newspaper cover, this is to catch the readers attention, hence it being called a 'pull' quote.

I will now define and explain the newspaper industry and their tactics used to gain the attention of readers. Firstly, a range of different newspapers are published in the uk, these include national, local and Sunday editions. The newspaper cover i have chosen is from 'the sun' which is a Sunday edition newspaper. 'The sun'' is also a tabloid newspaper rather then a broadsheet. This is because this can be identified with its 'red top' masthead and the fact that their newspapers are more colourful generally with much less information/script on the front page, instead usually a large main image, large main headline with minimal straplines and pull quotes. However, a broadsheet can usually be identified by much less colour and graphics being shown on its front page and more solid facts and news stories and much smaller main images and headlines on the front page instead, and example would be 'the guardian'. Furthermore, most newspapers have a political bias, either left or right wing. Left wing would be those that tend to support political parties such as the Labour party an socialist policies that advocate social equality, an example of this would be 'The Morning star'. Right-wing newspapers are those that tend to support conservative party and UKIP, believe in the free marker and oppose socialism, an example would be the newspaper i have chosen which is 'the sun'. Ownership has a great impact on the production and distribution of a set newspaper product. Rupert Murdoch has by far the largest newspaper corporation, this includes newspapers such as The Times, The Sunday Times and the newspaper i chose to analyse which is The Sun. The newspaper industry is in the hands of only a few powerful individuals and media groups. Even though overall newspaper sales are decreasing, the newspapers front pages till hold importance in communicating messages  targeted toward the audience. Every newspaper has news agendas, these are decisions made by gatekeepers who decide how the news is selected and constructed for an audience. The news values are the criteria that influence decisions made by the individuals or media groups who decide what stories should be shown in their newspaper, those consist of the owners themselves, editors and journalists.

These news values consist of: Threshold, this is the size of the story, which means the bigger the event is that occurred determines if it is more likely to get onto the news agenda. For instance the newspaper cover i chose has a large threshold due to the story being very significant and their for a news agenda to capture an audience. Negativity is a news agenda as bad news is more exiting and interesting for audiences rather then good news, this is also shown in the cover i have chosen, showing a terror attack that occurred in France that resulted in multiple casualties. Unexpectedness also relates to the cover i chose as it means an event that is a shock or out of the ordinary which can be related to the Paris terror attack, events such as this can overwhelm other stories off the news agenda and can change many variables of the cover last minute. Unambiguity is the factor of the events being not complex and easy to report, this wouldn't be related to the cover i chose as their are many question left to be answered for why the attack occurred in the first place. Unambiguity in a story can have higher agenda in newspapers. Human interest views in news stories are more likely to be higher in agenda, as readers are more interested in personalised subjects such as celebrities. Proximity is a factor taken more by local newspapers or tabloids such as the sun, this means the story tends to be more local to spark more interest in the reader, they are also more ethnocentric than other quality newspapers this is because local newspaper tend to judge other cultures based on their own preconceptions within their own culture. Elite nations are stories that focus on powerful nations or important individuals, countries such as the U.S would have an higher agenda due to the country being known as a 'superpower'. Continuity are stories which have high significance so it occurs multiple times as new aspects of the story are updated, e.g. Brexit which had multiple stages in the event which each need to be covered by news sources.
