Film Industry & Trailer Analysis

For my "Mainstream" high concept film, i have decide to use the recently released marvel superhero film 'Black Panther. This film is a clear example of a mainstream film as the audience behind this certain film is huge, this is due to all the popularity of the film across media due to this film being focused one of the first ever black superheroes to ever be created. This was seen as a huge milestone in the black community as it represents equal rights, so when this movie was due to be released it caused a lot of anticipation in seeing this live action film starring a majority black cast, the same goes for the narrative as the film is set in Africa where there is a hidden country called 'Wakanda' who are far more technologically advanced then the rest of the world and a warrior/king named 'Black Panther' protects the country, this idea is interesting in itself and visually appealing however this can empower the black community and intrigue them to watch the film. Furthermore, the marvel cinematic universe in general has amassed a huge following since the the comics which brings the biggest audience and fan base to the film. The genre of this film can be described as an action/sci-fi film, these genres are one of the most popular as these genres mostly relate to being interesting and entertaining, rather then boring. The film had a large budget of 200 million dollars and had a cast of popular, recognisable stars within its cast, such as: Chadwick Boseman, Michael B. Jordan, Lupita Nyong'o, Martin Freeman, Angela Bassett, Forest Whitaker and Andy Serkis just to name a few.

For my Independent film i have chosen is the love drama 'The Shape Of Water', this film has decent average sized audience, it stars a mute woman played by the well known actress Sally Hawkins and other actors/actresses such as Doug Jones(her Amphibian love interest), Michael Shannon, Octavia Spencer, Richard Jenkins and many more. The film was Directed by the renowned Guillermo Del Toro. This Director has produced many cult classics of films that bring off a dark, dramatic tone. Films such as Pans Labyrinth, Devils Backbone, Cronos, Mimic and Crimson peak has gained this director a fan base due to his unique and peculiar almost-horror based films that manage to be emotional and impactful whilst still being frightening. Del Toro has also produced more mainstream projects such as pacific rim, hobbit series, blade series and Hell boy series, all of which are more action films then horror. The narrative of the film follows the mute woman who is a janitor/cleaner at a lab and one day the scientists bring an amphibian humanoid sea creature and over time the mute women begins to fall in love with the creature, this is a clear indication of a romance/drama film as love is struck between these two. The film also seems to be set in the early 60's which could appeal to an audience who visually appeals to vintage aesthetics and even history of an insight of life during the Cold War. The film grossed 92.3 million dollars, which is much less then a high budget marvel film however amongst del toros most popular films, this one excelled and grossed the most, showing that it was popular.
